For Krista

So I won't make you wait any longer for a post about the new guy.  This past summer I recently caved and decided to give the whole Plenty of Fish online thing a try.  I had been on a few dates without much luck and was beginning to doubt that this was going to be the place I would meet Mr. Right. I went out with 3 guys which never went past the first date and then met another guy who seemed like he might be worth my time.  However after about 8 dates he seemed to have lost interest and just stopped calling.  I don't think it would have lasted much longer anyways, as there didn't really seem to be a spark.  I think we were both getting a little bored.

Then I started chatting online with Jon.  He was out of town at the time for his job and we planned to get together when he was back home.  We went out for lunch on November 10th for the first time and when he dropped me back off at home he genuinely seemed interested in going out for a second date some time.  A few hours later I got a text from him and he asked what I was doing that evening.  Our second date ended up being a lot sooner than I could have anticipated.  We watched a movie that night and had a great time again.  We have spent a lot of time together since then, getting together 4 or more times a week.  We always have lots to talk about and I feel very comfortable around him.  From day one I felt like I was able to be myself around him, joke around with him and just talk about whatever. I usually feel so nervous around new guys, not sure what to say or how to act.  With Jon it is like being with someone I have known forever.

He was born in Nova Scotia and grew up in Newfoundland.  He joined the military and moved to Ontario after high school.  He got transferred to Winnipeg two years ago.  He has gone back to Newfoundland to be with his family for Christmas and is coming back on Jan 2.  This will leave us with a few days to spend together before I have to go back to school and before he starts work in the new year.

As he left on December 19th we had to celebrate Christmas early.  Jon had suggested we set a limit for our gifts and we agreed upon $30.  I, being the type to follow the rules, stayed within the limit.  Jon, however, did not.  He surprised me with a manicure and pedicure gift certificate for the Clarion, Oasis Spa, as well as some bath products from Fruit and Passion.  A gift worth much more than the measly $30 I spent.  I decided to go with a theme for my gift and got him everything needed for a movie night in.  I got him a movie, a cozy fleece blanket and some treats.  I was glad that I at least picked him up dinner and a coffee from Tim Horton's on my way over that night.

Krista, there is a lot more I could tell you about this wonderful guy but I would prefer to update you more in person.  I hope I get to see you over the holidays and I will tell you more about the new guy in my life.  And to clarify: the tree is 6 feet. Jon is tall but not that tall.  I will have to get some better pictures of Jon and maybe of us together when he is back in the New Year. As for now these quick photos I took with my phone will have to do.

Christmas Time is Here

So today was my official first day of Christmas Break and I must say it was about the laziest day I've had in a very long time.  I watched a few Christmas movies, wrapped presents and just was plain old lazy.  I also got not one but two phone calls from my sweetheart.  He is currently spending the holidays with his family in Newfoundland.  I will post about him in a seperate post. :)

Watching a Christmas movie and enjoying my beautiful tree
I love the holidays and wanted to dedicate this post to the Christmas festivities I have already taken part in this year.

First I will begin with Olena and my 3rd annual Christmas baking extravaganza.  This year we made sugar cookies together and iced them and I also made a Mars Bar slice while she made dough for a few other types of Christmas cookies.

Making Cookies
I also took Olena to the Jason McCoy Christmas concert as part of her Christmas gift this year.  For about half of the show Jason sang Christmas songs and for the other half he sang his regular hits.  He was very entertaining and quite funny in between songs.  It was a great show.

Jason McCoy concert
Jon came over to help me decorate my tree this year.  I will admit I was a tad apprehensive of this, as I  can be a bit particular as to how my tree is decorated.  He did a fabulous job without much direction from me and we had a great time listening to Christmas carols and drinking tea.  And I didn't even suggest the idea! :)

Jon and my decorated tree
Last night we had our holiday potluck with my high school friends.  It was a great time and we had a pretty good turn out.  Unfortunately Ashley's little guy, Bentley, got sick and they were unable to join us and Tatiyana had other plans but otherwise the whole crew was there.  Leanne and Frank brought there two adorable boys, Xavi and Eliseo and Steph's boy, Cody, was also there.  Xavi has typically in the past played shy around me and other new people but we had a great time together yesterday.  He didn't shy away from me when he came in and after I helped him with his coat and boots I had him glued to my side the rest of the night.  Andrea, who isn't always able to make it out to our potlucks, as she lives out of town, was there as well and it was great catching up with her.  I really have a pretty awesome group of friends.  I am pretty impressed at how we have managed to make time for eachother and stayed close in the 10 years since high school.  I also love how our group is growing with the addition of new significant others and children.

Next year's Chirstmas Card?
Cute kids

The next three days shall be filled with a lot of celebrating, family and food.  Looking forward to three days of Christmas and all the joy that comes with it.

Mikey

Dear Mikey,

I am thinking of you a lot today Mikey and wishing I could be celebrating your 25th birthday with you.  How you would have loved looking out the window this morning to see all this snow.  You would have, no doubt, had your snowmobile geared up and been out there making some tracks in this newly fallen snow by now.  How I wish you could be.  And then later tonight you would have happily joined our family to help you in celebrating this special day.  The jokes and stories you would have told would have brought smiles to everyone's faces as we gathered to celebrate you.  Instead today we think about you with both sadness for the time we will not get to spend with you but also with fondness and love for the time we did have together.  It was far too short but I am so thankful for every moment I got to spend with you.

Your brother wrote a wonderful memory to you on Facebook today.  I know your brother, sister-law and niece miss you so much and I am certain they are sharing wonderful memories about you with your nephew Owen.  It is such a shame that he will never have the chance to meet his amazing uncle.

Happy Birthday Mikey. We miss you soo much, I think about you all the time. Sometimes more than others like this morning with a fresh 8 inches of snow on your birthday. You would have been so happy. You wouldn't have been quite so happy yesterday when the snow was starting and people were having to learn how to drive in snow again. I can just imagine the stories you would have had about them today. Paige got her first new snowmobile helmet from Kurt at Tcona the other day, after she picked the one she wanted and we decided to get it she said "daddy now we can put a 22 on it for my uncle Mikey". I am so glad she has the memories of you that she does but am so pissed off and sad for you and her that you dont get to be a part of these times, she would have been so excited to show her uncle Mikey. I think about all the moments that we aren't going to have together and it makes me so sad, its so unfair. Everything that happens I think of you and miss you, when its good or bad I wish you were here with me. We are going for a atv ride today like we did on this day last year in honor of you. Owen looks exactly like you and I'm sure he will be ripping around the back yard on atv 's and snowmobiles just like you did. I don't know what to believe in but I hope you in some way get to watch your niece and nephew grow and be happy. I know I am a better person because I had you in my life I miss you and love you so much. R.I.P
-Bill Mooney

I had to laugh thinking about all those times you vented about those darn Winnipeg drivers and how it could be that so many people out there just 'did not know how to drive in this snow.  It's like none of them had ever seen a Winnipeg winter before.'  I never knew you to get mad or upset about anything except when it came to people's driving skills.  You always had a smile on your face and a positive outlook on life.  You were one of the happiest people I know and could bring a smile to anyone's face at any time.  You really did live every day as if it could be your last and enjoyed life to the fullest. I hope you knew how much you were loved and how many people cared so deeply for you.  You have touched so many lives and your memory will live on forever.

I love you so much and miss you more than words can say.

Love,
    Samantha

Halloween Weekend

So this weekend Olena and I enjoyed some Halloween festivities.  With the new fall of snow it felt more like we should be getting ready for Christmas instead but we had a great time.  Friday night we started off by carving some pumpkins.  These pumpkins were grown by Steve and Olena in their amazing garden this year.  Here are the results...

Saturday night we headed to a Halloween social for a lady that Olena works with.  Olena and I decided to go as flappers and surprisingly the costume ended up being really easy to find.  Olena saw the dresses at Giant Tiger and they were perfect.  The headbands we found right away at Clair's and the Boa's were the last two they had at Dollarama. The next day I headed to Ardene's and they had just gotten the gloves in and they were buy one get one half off and they had two feather hair clips left that were just perfect as well.  The cigarette thing came from drinking straws from Dollarama that we stuck a white pencil crayon in the end and coloured the tip black.  It was such an easy and comfortable costume and I think we looked pretty good.

Buzz and Boomer also made a surprise visit for the "First Dance" which the bride and groom made everyone get up and dance for as well.  The groom's men all dressed up as LMFAO and they played one of their songs for this dance.  It was a really cute idea.  You can see the groom dressed up behind us in the previous picture.

And of course Olena and I didn't go home empty handed.  We tend to have pretty good luck when it comes to winning social prizes.  This was my half of the social prize we won:

My Classroom

A quick visual tour of my classroom.  There's still a few more things I need to do but so far this is what it looks like.  Oh ya and I still need desks!!!!  Just a minor detail.  I hope my principal will have some in for me the next time I go in so I can start arranging the room the way I want.

Here is my room standing on the side closest to the door (the door is to my right in this picture.  The front of the room is also to my right with a white board and another chalkboard.  I did not take a picture of this as it still needs work and is currently where my pile of things are.

This is my reading corner which I love!!  The bulletin board will have some things on it, just don't have them up yet.  I painted the words on the back of the bookcase but the giraffes are decals.  All of the decals on the wall are from Dollarama.  I hope it's not too busy or distracting for the kids.

I have super cute labels for my book bins I need to get laminated first.  The chair was one I found in the states and painted and the bookcase was a pamphlet stand from St. Vital Museum they were giving away.  After replacing a couple boards and painting it, I think it looks pretty cool.

My Daily 5- Work on Writing Bulletin Board.

This will be for my Diversity of Living Things bulletin board.  I still have more to do obviously and some things are getting laminated so it's not much.

My fish tank with rocks I stole from Winnipeg Beach.  Shhhhh. Don't tell!  The fish will be taken from my parents pond but I'll wait until after the long weekend to bring them in.

My cupboards for storage.  More decals from Dollarama...

 My door and calendar.

Well that's the five cent tour.  I will possibly post some more pics after everything is complete.

Art Study for Next Year- O'Keeffe

An idea for an art study next year.  A couple years back I did a short art lesson and activity on Georgia O'Keeffe.  I recently came across this quote from her while looking on Pintrest and it reminded me of the activity I did.  Thinking I might do an artist study next year and focus a few lessons on O'Keeffe.  Below are some of her works of art and then the exemplar I used for our class art activity (I found this idea online).

We talked about the use of warm and cool colours and some students used cool colours for their pictures while others used warm colours.  This lesson allowed us to talk about warm/cool colours, line and abstract art.  After looking at some other ideas online I'm excited to try out something different and a little more creative.  I've never been really creative when it comes to art but love some of the ideas I have found online and that my teaching partner last year showed me.  Hoping to have a much better art program for my kiddos next year.

Here are some more interesting art activities based on O'Keeffe I found:

Well there are a few ideas I can use for next year.  I'll try to plan out a few ideas for some other artists and put them together as well.  Not sure which of these I will use but it's nice to have some options.

Rocking Stripes

I bought this rocking chair for cheap during my last trip to the states with the hopes of painting it and using it for in my classroom.  It took two coats of white paint and then several hours to draw on and paint the zebra stripes but I am very happy with the end result.  Now I just have to plan out the rest of my reading corner.

Clayton Bellamy

I have had the chance to see one of my favourite Canadian artists, Clayton Bellamy, perform 4 times now. The first three times were with the Roadhammers (who have a new album coming out in the fall), and most recently I got to see him perform as the Clayton Bellamy Band.  On his own he isn't as country as he is with the Roadhammers but he has a really good sound and some great songs.  I thought I'd share two of his songs with you as I really enjoy them both.

Countryfest Craziness!!!

Wow what a weekend!!!! This was my first time up to Dauphin Countryfest and I am so glad I had an opportunity to go.  I think anyone who is a fan of country music needs to experience this festival first hand.  If I go back, there are a few things I would do differently, but it was still a great time and I loved every minute of it.  I got to enjoy it with my brother and sister-in-law who had won the tickets and camping spot.

Our campsite was CRAZY!!!!!  We arrived Friday night to find a beer pong table set up in the middle of our site, a bunch of rowdy drunk guys and pretty much every inch of ground covered with empty beer cans, bottles and cups.  One of the guys came over and informed us that someone came around earlier taking pics and named our campsite the dirtiest campsite there.  This was before we even arrived!!! They did at least help us "clean up" which consisted of kicking all the garbage under their camper to clear space for us to set up our tent.  Our crazy neighbours also enjoyed Techno Music which they blasted all night long on their THREE very large speakers using their incredibly loud generator.  Needless to say we did not get much sleep this weekend.  This on top of the sun beating down on the tent, turning it into a sauna by about 8am made for very little sleep.  Lying awake Saturday night listening to all this commotion I got to enjoy quite the drama occurring next door to us as one of our neighbours punched another guy who had gone into his trailer, doing who knows what, until one of the girls stepped in and tried to calm him down.  There was definitely no shortage of things to listen to as I lay awake each night trying to fall asleep.  I also got hit by a flying beer can that shot over their trailer at one point, splattering my clothes and all with lovely beer (this was not the first, nor the last time, I had alcohol spilled on me this weekend).  Glad I brought several changes of clothes, as I was unable to stay clean for very long.

We did get the opportunity to walk around and check out some of the other campsites which were quite elaborately done up.  It was obvious who has been doing Countryfest year after year as they know how to set up properly.  There were a lot of inflatable pools which would have come in very handy this weekend, and tarps for shade between other camp sites.  This was one of the coolest decorated sites we saw:

We did find ways to cool off though.  This creek was absolutely crazy.  We brought our chairs down to sit here on Saturday afternoon.  We stayed closer upstream in the creek though as everybody just tossed their beer cans down stream when they finished with them so you would get hit by floating beer cans as you sat there in the water.  There had to be 1000 people in this creek when we were there.

On Sunday we opted to head to Rainbow Beach, just outside of Dauphin for the day and sat in the clear, calm water there.  It was a much more relaxing atmosphere.  When we got back we took several walks to the water mister that was set up outside the main stage area to cool off.  Steve decided to sit in the truck with the air on for awhile as he was feeling sick from the heat and so Olena and I headed to an afternoon concert at this time.  When we got back, over an hour later, the truck was still running with Steve (and both sets of keys) inside.  We tapped on the door to wake him but there was no response.  After 10 minutes of pounding on the door and yelling his name with no response, Olena headed to get security and see if they could help us break into the vehicle.  We were a little worried he might have had heat stroke and we couldn't believe that our loud pounding on the door by his head would not wake him up.  I stayed back and continued to pound on the vehicle with little success, as our crazy neighbours watched me with amusement.  Finally after almost 20 minutes of pounding, Steve woke up, and aside from being still a bit sick from the heat and very tired, he was fine.

The evenings were filled with some amazing concerts.  Friday night we saw Ronny Dunn.  Saturday we saw Aaron Lines, Justin Moore and Zac Brown Band.  Sunday was Tara Oram, Chris Cagle and Reba McEntire.  We also watched Codie Prevost on Sunday afternoon and I absolutely loved his song "I'm OK" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJtG6xy2lAc  which I heard for the first time there.  On Saturday night we also enjoyed Clayton Bellamy (my favourite member of The Road Hammers) after the Zac Brown Band Concert.

Tara Oram was hilarious.  She's got a little bit of a mouth on her, but she was so down to earth and connected so well with the audience.  She was telling all sorts of jokes between her songs and had me laughing quite hard.

Chris Cagle was amazing.  He really connected with the audience as well and was picking out people all evening to comment on and talk to.  With that size of an audience it was amazing how intimate he made his concert feel.

Zac Brown Band was by far my favourite.  They were so amazing and put on the most incredible show.  It just made you want to dance and sing along the entire time.  Loved it!!!

Reba finished off the show on Sunday night and although I am not a huge Reba fan it was still amazing to see her perform.  There is no doubt she is one talented lady.  The crowd went wild when she came out to do her encore of Fancy in her stunning red dress.

The concerts were packed.  It was amazing to see all those people there to watch the shows.  I just loved the outdoor concert vibe and the weather was so wonderful.  Even though we were outside the sound was amazing and it was all so well done.

We decided to take our time coming back today and drove through Riding Mountain and took a few stops along the way.  Steve and Olena had never been so it was fun doing a little site seeing with them on our way home.   We drove through the Bison enclousure at Lake Audy and did some shopping in Wasagaming and had some lunch there by the beach.

What a GREAT weekend!!!!!!!
